Overview: Red Queen, by Victoria Aveyard, tells the riveting story of Mare, whose family is one of the Reds, the bottom caste in this dystopian future society. Due to a strange ability that she has, Mare finds herself not only living in the palace with the dominant Silvers but engaged to the prince. Yet a rebellion is brewing among the downtrodden Reds. Whose side will Mare be on? This is a great read for anyone who likes Divergent or The Hunger Games.

Age Level and Length: Reading level is grades 7-8; interest level grades 8-10. At more than 400 pages, this book is not for slow readers. Maturity or Political Issues: This is a dystopian novel, which means it shows a grim and often frightening future society. Several deaths are alluded to but not directly described; the use of suicide pills is also mentioned. There are also supernatural elements, since Mare and others have specific powers. There is a romance but no sexual scenes. An LBGT character is introduced; this aspect is mentioned but not emphasized.
Additional Considerations: For 8th graders and older, this is a great book for those who liked The Hunger Games or Divergent. This book is first in a four-book series. The other books in the series, in order, include Glass Sword, King’s Cage, and War Storm.
