It uses 16 Oldies Pop Song Lyrics and 23 questions on figurative language:

Most pop songs are poetry set to music.

"Oldies" songs in particular are often chock-full of sound effects and figurative language: alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, personifications, and more. Kids usually enjoy looking and listening for these elements in pop songs more than they enjoy looking for them in actual poems.

Parents should not have to worry about kids listening to these 16 classic oldies from the 60's and 70's. They are written and performed by iconic musicians such as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, and the Beach Boys. This lesson contains the lyrics to 16 oldies pop songs, followed by 23 questions that ask students to find things like metaphors, similes, rhyme schemes, and alliteration in them.

We recommend you also play the songs in class while kids work on the questions; all songs are free and freely available on YouTube.I have done this lesson for several years now in my poetry unit, and kids love it. Don't be surprised, after listening to these fun and catchy songs, if some kids download some of these songs for their own music collection. . That’s what always happens in my class!
